Ms. Ferial Youakim Dear Ferial: I remember when I first arrived in San Francisco for the AICI (Association of Image Consultants International) conference this past year. My main goal was to meet people who possessed image expertise and credibility, people who had been involved in this industry for years and who had developed-rightly so-a solid reputation for good work. I hoped to connect with them, learn from them, absorb their knowledge, and then possibly use this all in my aspiring image-based business. My initial impression of you was of a vibrant energy-engaging, energetic, fun, professional, and inclusive. You will recall that we do not remember the actual specifics of where we first met during this conference . . . we just sort of "connected" during our week's stay. I would occasionally see you in the hallway, or be seated at the same table with you . . . but then I noticed that you were busily working behind "The Australia Image Company" booth and thought . . . ah, she must be affiliated with this company. And she must firmly believe in its product and content to be so focused and determined. Although surrounded by myriad people demanding your attention and wanting answers to questions, you smoothly and calmly handled them all. I later discovered that you had your own company: AWIS Beauty, and that you offered educational image training of your own. I read your credentials, and recognized that you were the only person authorized in the United States to teach the body portfolio computer program. Moreover, you were extensively trained in color and make-up; I decided to make the commitment to learn more about image directly from you. I'm glad I did. I have been an educator over fifteen years and am well aware that people learn in different ways: some students are visual, some are audio, some are tactile, some a blend. Your teaching style allowed for all types of learners to understand and retain the information. For example, you would teach by a PowerPoint presentation, but then have your students deliver their own PowerPoint presentation. The end result? An encouragement to not only "talk through" the information, but also some valuable time to practice our public speaking skills! You took us to the local shopping mall and gave us "on the spot" tests: Which color is warm based? Which color is blue based? Do you see that garment? What type of client would you put that on? That person over there . . . what color profile is she? What type of body does she possess? What clothes should she wear? What clothes should she avoid? These types of trips were invaluable. . . . added reinforcement to lecture information. Anyone can read in a book. At AWIS we applied the information. This makes all the difference. If I may, even more importantly, I would like to comment-and commend-you for your delivery of information. In my job as an educator, I am well aware of the power of speaking delivery. To fully connect with an audience-of one or many-you need to possess expertise, animation, and sincerity. You possess all three. You often speak, Ferial, of your belief that ALL people, all woman and all men, are beautiful. This is not something said to earn admiration from others; rather it is said because you truly and sincerely believe it. Listening to you speak . . . in the classroom or in casual conversation outside of it . . . .I get the sense that you feel passionately about making ALL people feel good about themselves . . . you desire to help them feel not only good, but to feel their very possible best. What a most powerful calling . . . may you long continue to do just that. . . . . . . It was a pleasure. Sincerely, LisaMarie Luccioni January 24, 2006 Dear Ferial: About 10 months ago, I contacted you and expressed my desire to learn more about the image consulting business and my dream to transition my career path into a more rewarding direction. I had no idea what I was in for. Finally, after what seemed an eternity of putting this dream on hold, and months of planning and saving, I was able to afford time away from my full time paralegal position and leave my 2 sons and husband for what I initially thought may be a very lonely two weeks. After the first day, I knew that the decision to train with AWIS Beauty, was a brilliant move on my part. There was so much to learn and your teaching style was customized as we went along to fit the needs of your students. By day three, your approach had evolved into more "hands on" which suited our group the best. You have the most engaging presence and your constant reinforcement of your belief in each of us, kept us focused and confident. Before I knew it, the first week had ended and I felt as though I gained so much..not only the knowledge from your experience and expertise, but the realization that my dream was becoming a reality. There was this sense of excitement in me and I felt I could pop out of my skin! Week two started and we moved on to color. Again, you altered your teaching style slightly to accommodate a brief frustration among our group, as this material was slightly complicated. As the end of week two approached, there was a mixture of feelings. For one, I had grown to truly care and connect with you on a very pure genuine level, and second, I was enjoying learning from you and wanted it to continue, but knew the course was coming to a close. This was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of my life. Your passion to see each of us succeed in this business was heartfelt and I will always look to you as a great teacher, mentor and friend. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for enriching my life! Best Wishes, Christina Wilson February 9, 2006 Ferial Youakim Dear Ferial, I wanted to take a moment to send you a word of thanks. I am very pleased with the skills you taught me in the 2 week class on Color, Style and Image. I can't help but feel overwhelmed with determination with the tools, training and motivation you have given me. Words cannot begin to express how inspirational you are as a woman, and it clearly reflects in your teaching skills. I went home every evening during the training, excited about the possibilities that lie ahead of me. I am very anxious to watch my customers walk away with renewed images of themselves because of the skills I can use to help them. As you know, I have struggled to make a change in my career. As a 17 year Flight Attendant with Northwest Airlines, I have watched the quality of the company I am working for deteriorate to the point that I no longer feel the importance of my employment there. It has afforded me many wonderful opportunities over the years, and I am ready to slowly make the transition out. After AWIS training, I am certain that I have found my new path. I am an image consultant who was trained by Ferial Youakim. I attended her training in September 2005. I would recommend Ferial to anyone who has a desire to begin or enhance their own image consulting business. Ferial has a passion and enthusiasm for image consulting which is communicated in her training sessions. She is dedicated to her students and makes sure they understand each aspect of image consulting. She listened to each student question and willingly answered and instructed until we thoroughly understood the information we needed to be successful consultants. Ferial gave us hands on experiences which made her instruction enjoyable and comprehensive. She used opportunities in and out of the meeting room to teach us. She made her instruction come to life so I could use it properly. Her training has given me a strong foundation on which I can build my business. Ferial’s consultant training was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. Words can not describe how much it means to me to help others be the best they can be in their station in life. I am so BLESSED to have attended the 10-day AWIS training. My sister, Theseia Tribble, introduced me to the term: Image Consultant and ignited my excitement about becoming an Image Consulting: Image Consultant. I really so I did a "google" search on the term and so much information came back I really did not know where to begin my search. I happened upon the AICI website and thank GOD I was directed to AWIS Beauty. From the moment I spoke with Ferial I knew that I had found my niche. Every day of the 10-day training was so exciting I could not sleep at night. Ideas are still flowing through me at record speed. I was happy to learn that I do have a sense of "image" already and that with this additional education and certification I can go very far in this field. Loving what you do is so important. Loving what you do is what makes you want to do it for free. Loving what you do is what I've been searching for--for a long, long time. Ferial's instruction was so down to earth -- even spiritual for me. She was patient and has made herself available to me, even after the ten days of training. I'm reminded of a passage from the book "The Heart Aroused by David Whyte: "In the middle of the road of my life I'm in the middle of life's road, and I have found where I belong.
